There is a secret to a great lawn. It all begins with a question in most people, how to grow grass seed? There is not a magic formula. It takes time and knowledge. Your ultimate goal is to have a lush thick yard. A thick lawn resists pests and is usually easier to care for. One of the best ways to achieve a thicker yard is to plant more grass seed or as some people call it overseeding. I overseed my lawn every fall and in the spring I have the most beautiful and the thickest lawn in my neighborhood.
I used to have a lot of bare spots in my lawn. I live in the south and there are a lot of turf type fescues that grow in my region. Some fescues grow better than others. I learned that I was sowing the seed at the wrong time of the year and the grass didn't live long enough to survive the heat that it was exposed to. Grass must be able to establish a healthy root system before being able to withstand heat and pests.
There are a lot of different methods and it boils down to a personal choice and possibly your geographical area as to what works best to get your grass to grow. I personally like to aerate and overseed my yard at least once a year. I have had great results with overseeding. A lot of people like to do a heavy raking and throw out grass seed in the hopes that it will germinate. If you rake your bare spots and spread grass seed, you must put soil or top soil over the grass seed to start the germination. Sowing a lawn is not hard, you just have to use a good method. Sowing grass seed on a new lawn, is perhaps the hardest work of all. It can take a few years for a yard to fully establish itself if you start with a new lawn. I would probably lay all new sod if I was working on a brand new yard and not even deal with seeding.
There are 2 ingredients you must have to be successful. You must have have heat to grow grass. It's the number one ingredient. You must also have a steady supply of water. There are optimum temperature ranges for grass to do well. That's why spring and fall seasons are the best time to sow grass seed.
When you are sowing grass seed, you must water every single day until the roots are established. The grass seed must be in contact with the soil to germinate and grow. In my area, I water constantly for 2 weeks after planting grass seed. I hope these lawn care tips will help you establish a thick green yard that will be the envy of all your neighbors.
