Since NASA released the formula for memory foam to the public in the 1980s, it has grown in popularity with its promises of reduced joint pain and better sleep.  In the past decade or so, the price of memory foam has decreased so that its products are no longer exclusively for wealthy people.  A memory foam body pillow, although it began as a medical therapy for sleep apnea and insomnia, is now available for anyone not suffering from these disorders as well and can give anyone a better night of sleep.

One of the biggest selling points for memory foam is that is molds to the shape of a sleeper’s body.  This is especially advantageous in mattresses, of course, but a body pillow that forms to the curves of sore joints and aching backs is equally desirable.  Memory foam is also heat sensitive, which means a pillow will be firm in colder temperatures and soft in warmer temperatures.  Heat sensitivity helps the foam mold to a body.  When the skin comes in contact with the pillow or mattress, body warmth softens the memory foam.  Pressure points will press into the foam, therefore putting off more heat and softening the foam further.  In extremely cold temperatures, if body heat is not enough, simply turning up the heater or warming the skin with a blow dryer for a few minutes can be sufficient to soften the pillow. With both body molding and heat sensitive technology, a memory foam body pillow will simultaneously cushion and support every part of an aching body.

Pregnant women find body pillows particularly useful for orthopedic reasons; a pregnant woman cannot sleep on her back or stomach, for obvious reasons, and often the forced side position combined with the normal pains of pregnancy make sleep extremely difficult.  A pillow placed between the knees relieves pressure on the knees and the loosening hip bones, and a full body pillow gives shape and support to someone unused to side sleeping.  For an expectant mother, the extra relief of memory foam can turn an uncomfortable, painful, and sleepless night into one she can find comfort in.

Although memory foam can hardly be considered dangerous, there are a few things to keep in mind.  A new memory foam body pillow may give off a normally harmless chemical odor that can make breathing difficult for people with asthma or other respiratory problems.  This will usually go away after a good airing-out.  Memory foam can be combustible, although new laws disallow bedding that is not moderately flame-retardant.  However, with a little circumspection most owners of a memory foam body pillow or mattress will find that the benefits greatly outweigh the miniscule amount of risk.
