By Jake Duke

As a parent, we have all been concerned with how to properly care for our children's teeth. From the very first time we see that tiny glimmer of white peeking through their gum, we must begin to take their teeth care seriously.

It all begins with toddler tooth care and continues through out the lives of our children. It's really a journey of a lifetime because we just want to take care of our children's teeth.

I've raised 2 kids now and they are both adults. The first thing I did as a parent was to find a good pediatric dentist and I began regular visits that paid off in the long run. I recommend that you interview several children dentist's in your town before making a decision. Don't just pick one from the phone book.

Good teeth in children can definitely affect their well being and self-esteem. Good teeth in children even affects their overall health. If their teeth are not healthy, it can quickly become a source of pain for the child and parent. You do not want your children to dread trips to the dentist.

Pediatric dentists can help you avoid problems with your children's teeth. What do you need to know to keep your child's teeth healthy?

Good oral hygiene starts with your child's first tooth. This can be a difficult time for you and your child. The child can experience tooth pain which is typical in growing pains for a child.

Kid's can get irritable and also drool a lot. They will put their fingers and everything they can get their hands on in their mouth. When children are teething, they may experience pain and a low grade fever. Be very careful of a high fever. If it's over 101, contact your physician immediately. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Remedies for teething discomfort include cool teething rings. Small amounts of topical medications and cool compresses on the gums.

Once your child's first tooth appears, you should be aware of the possible dangers of baby bottle tooth decay. A form of decay occurs when your child's teeth are in prolonged contact with any liquid other than water. The consequences are startling. It can cause rapid decay. Even though baby teeth fall out, they still need attention. Baby teeth help children chew food, speak clearly and start a healthy foundation for their permanent teeth.

To help prevent baby bottle tooth decay,

  • Never put your child to bed with a bottle.
  • Limit fruit juice intake to 4-6 oz per day
  • Fill bottle with water if you child longs for a bottle

One of the best ways to insure fewer problems in the future, is to get your children brushing their teeth with a fluoride toothpaste as early as possible. Fluoride is responsible for a significant reduction in the instances of dental decay of children in this country in the last 50 years. Fluoride is vitamins for children's teeth. Fluoride attacks plaque and re-mineralizes the teeth of children.

It may be good to set a routine for your children. Make brushing their teeth a routine. A good idea is to have your children brush their teeth after breakfast, lunch and dinner if possible. It's very important to have them brush before they go to bed at night. Children may like to brush their teeth alone, but it's a good idea for a parent to supervise this activity to make sure they brush correctly.Small children may actually try to eat the toothpaste because it tastes so good. You should use just enough toothpaste to taste.

If your children are prone to cavities, discuss the use of fluoride supplements with your dentist. The most important way to keep your child's teeth healthy is to simply watch what they eat. Diet habits play the most significant role of any of the variables that a parent can control in keeping your children from having dental decay.

There is nothing like a child's smile and your child may even go further in life with a great smile.
