Fire Ants usually get a very bad rap and deservedly so. These little critters can mess up your whole day if you step in their mound. Most of us spend all our time trying to get rid of fire ants. I spend my fair share of money buying insecticides and poison for fire ants because I live in the south and they invade my yard every year.

Fire ant stings burn very badly and can last for days leaving red sores and sometimes scars. Fire ants are amazing though, they can embody some of society's most cherished ideals. Fire ants are very strong creatures. They can carry 10 times their body weight. Can you imagine an average adult male lifting a a one ton truck?

Fire ants are known for their teamwork. Fire ants can bring down animals and other insects much larger than themselves.

Teamwork helps fire ants reproduce. After the queen fire ant mates, she can produce 200 eggs per hour. A queen fire ant can produce over 3 million fire ants in her lifetime. She actually produces female fire ants. All of the worker fire ants are female.

The queen only produces male fire ants in the spring. The male fire ants only purpose in life is mating. Hey what a life for a male fire ant.

Fire ants have an amazing ability to work together as a team towards a common goal. They can consume a small carcass overnight.

It's very important to eliminate these mounds once they are spotted in your yard. The problem with fire ant mounds is that sometimes they are very concealed in the grass and are easily stepped on without even noticing. Your ankles and legs can be covered in fire ants and you not even realize it until the biting and stinging has begun and it's too late.
