Dental Health For Kids
61One of the best things you can do for your child is to make a game out of their dental health. Plan some fun for your kids and it will make learning much more fun. The Crest company makes dental kits for kids as part of their dental health education program. The kits are compliments of
Crest, as part of the company’s first grade dental health education
program.
It’s a great way for the children to really interact with a dental health program and it’s very hands on.
It's very important that children learn the proper techniques for brushing and flossing at the earliest age possible. As a parent, think of what a great smile can do for the self esteem and well being of your child? It's so easy nowadays and easy to learn. Plaque is a major problem with children's teeth and it is sometimes invisible. Plaque can cause cavities.
One of the cool things you can do to help your child learn is to use an egg carton to demonstrate how to properly brush.
Egg cartons are good to demonstrate how to brush
It's really never to early to start. A lot of public schools are helping parents as early as the first grade. Schools have found it beneficial to make a game out of it with the students. It certainly helps them to learn. You should inquire at your school if such a program for kids oral health is available. If not, maybe you should spearhead an effort to get one started.
Children love to interact with such programs. It's very hands on. Give the students a little background on what they are learning. They are very smart. Then give them actual demonstrations using different props such as the egg shell crate pictured above.
One such program I have observed is the one where the teachers give the students little red tablets to chew. (available on Amazon, click the link provided). If the pink sticks to their teeth, you can explain that is bacteria in their mouth. Now that the kid's can actually see the bacteria on their teeth, it is now a good time to let them brush their teeth and show them how to do it properly.
Kid's sized brushes with soft bristles are the best for kids. They will not damage the gums. A stiff bristle could damage the gum and worst yet, it could turn your child off from brushing.
Flossing is very important. If your child does not floss, they can get cavities.
If you have a very small child whose teeth are just coming in, it's a good idea to wipe your baby's gums with gauze 3 times a day. Start using a brush when your baby's first tooth comes through. At this time, do not use toothpaste.
You may not realize it, but a lot of dental professionals ask that you do not introduce toothpaste to a child until the age of 2 years old. Parent's should supervise brushing until the age of 8. You can use your own experience as a child to help determine a good method for your children.
Use an American Dental Association (ADA) approved fluoride toothpaste. The fluoride makes for strong teeth. Children under 6 tend to swallow toothpaste so make sure they only use about the amount of a pea on their toothbrush.
By age 3, make sure your child begins oral examinations from a pediatric dentist.
Watch the snacks your children eat. Cheese, crunchy fruits and vegetables are the best foods for your child.
Make it a game and fun for your child. Sing songs and really interact with them. This is one of the best things that you can do as a parent for good dental health for your kids.
