Did you know that there is an actual Bed Bug Registry website that contains a free database of user submitted reports about bed bugs? Well, now you do. It seems that bed bus have become a real growing problem in America. Reports come in from across the entire United States.

The worst thing for a motel or hotel is online reports that they are suffering from a bed bug infestation. Until 2006, consumers had no way of knowing about this problem. Once the Bed Bug Registry was formed, consumers now have a way of checking and reporting bed bugs. Currently, there are over 12,000 locations with bed bug reports. Most of us have never experienced an infestation but it's nice to know we have a way to check some destinations for bed bugs now.

Exterminate Bed Bugs

It's unlikely that our country will ever exterminate bed bugs. Our only hope is to try and control it the best way possible. If you have ever stayed at a hotel that had bed bugs, you could have possibly helped spread them unknowingly. Bed bugs can travel in your clothing and luggage easily. Anywhere there are large numbers of people gathering there lies the possibility of an infestation. People come from all over and you do not know where they have stayed the previous evening and what my have travelled in their clothing.

What are bed bugs?

Bed Bugs are tiny insects that drink the blood of humans. Nice huh? They hide in cracks and crevices and love to come out at night to feed. How can you tell you've been bitten by a bed bug? You may see a tiny welt form that looks similar to other insect bites like a mosquito. The good news is that they are not considered to spread diseases but it could sort of freak you out knowing that you have been sleeping in a bed with bugs. Some people call them bed mites.

What does a bed bug bite look like?

Ok, this is sort of gross but you need to know in case you get a bite yourself.

Bed Bug Alerts

One of the cool things about the Bed Bug Registry is that you can sign up for e-mail alerts based on your geographical location. If someone reports a bed bug infestation near you, you get an email alert based on your zip code.

How can I avoid Bed Bugs?

One of the most common ways to avoid bed bugs is to use a mattress cover. Some of the bed bug experts recommend that if you can wash anything infected with very hot water, that may get rid of the bugs. Boiling water will certainly kill bed bugs on contact. Pesticides work also but the first line of defense is a mattress pad.

Here are just a few mattress pads I selected on Amazon. You can click any product below to read reviews or make additional product selections.

I live in a apartment building that is infested with these creatures. the best defense that i have found that works is use spray foam around all incoming pipes. the heater pipes anything that has a hole in it plug it with spray foam. the foam expands to fill the hole completely. my friends place is surrounded by people on either side of her that have had nothing but bedbug problems her place has not had one bug in it!!
